Rhinoplasty

(Nose Job)

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that alters the shape of the nose. This surgery can be performed to repair damage from an injury, correct congenital defects, or address breathing difficulties. The nose's structure consists of an upper portion made of bone and a lower portion composed of cartilage. Rhinoplasty can modify the bone, cartilage, skin, or all three components. The procedure planning takes into account your other facial features, the skin quality on your nose, and your desired changes.

How?

  • Rhinoplasty can be performed either inside the nose or through a small external incision at the base of the nose, between the nostrils. The surgeon typically readjusts the bone and cartilage beneath the skin.
  • The shape of the bones or cartilage in your nose can be altered in various ways, depending on the extent of changes needed, the nose's structure, and available materials.
  • For minor changes, cartilage may be taken from deeper inside the nose or from the ear. For more significant changes, cartilage from a rib, implants, or bone from other parts of the body may be used. After these modifications are made, the skin and tissue on the nose are repositioned, and the incisions are stitched together.

Why?

Rhinoplasty can change the size, shape or proportions of the nose. It may be done to fix issues from an injury, correct a birth defect or improve some breathing problems.

The difference between Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty:

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to alter the shape of the nose. This surgery can be used to improve both the appearance of the nose and breathing function, as the two are often interconnected. (credit Mayo Clinic)

Septoplasty is another surgical procedure aimed at improving breathing. It corrects the nasal septum, the wall that divides the nasal passages into right and left sides. A crooked septum can obstruct airflow, making it difficult to breathe through the nose. Septoplasty is frequently performed alongside rhinoplasty to address both functional and aesthetic concerns simultaneously. (credit Mayo Clinic)

What sort of results should I expect?

The results of rhinoplasty are long-lasting. Initial swelling decreases within a few weeks, but it can take up to a year for the nasal contour to fully refine. During this period, you may observe gradual changes as your nose settles into its permanent shape.
