Eyelid Lift

(Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. This surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Whether you want to enhance your appearance or address functional issues with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes. It can treat loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision, as well as fatty deposits that cause puffiness in the eyelids. Additionally, it can address bags under the eyes, drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris, and excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid.

What?

Eyelid surgery can treat a variety of issues, including loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision. This sagging skin can make you look older and more tired than you feel, and in some cases, it can even interfere with your line of sight, affecting daily activities such as reading or driving. The procedure can also address fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids, which can give the eyes a swollen or tired look.

Additionally, it can effectively remove bags under the eyes, a common sign of aging that can make you look worn out. Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris, another issue that can be corrected with eyelid surgery, can cause a sad or fatigued appearance and sometimes lead to eye dryness or irritation. Lastly, the procedure can eliminate excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid, helping to restore a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Methods?

There are two main types of blepharoplasty: upper eyelid blepharoplasty and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Let’s explore both.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty - One of the most common facial procedures, upper eyelid blepharoplasty, is performed to enhance appearance, improve vision, or both. During the surgery, the surgeon removes drooping eyelid skin and excess fat and, if necessary, repairs the muscles that help open your eyes.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty - Lower eyelid blepharoplasty involves repositioning or removing fat pads that form under the eyes, creating bags and circles. The procedure also includes removing excess skin and strengthening muscles and tendons. While under anesthesia, an additional procedure may be performed to maintain long-term results:

  • Canthoplasty: Tightens the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the outer corners of the eyes, where the upper and lower eyelids meet (the canthus).
  • Canthopexy: A less complex procedure where the outer corner of the eyes is tightened with invisible stitches, leaving the muscles and tendons untouched.
